Silverchair drummer's wifejoins 'Real Housewives ofMelbourne' - FasterLouder

American reality show franchise Real Housewives is spreading to Australia like televised cancer, and the first local edition will be Real Housewives of Melbourne. Included in the half-dozen cast members announced so far is Jackie Gillies, a “professional psychic” and also the wife of former Silverchair drummer (and current Bento frontman) Ben Gillies. The rest of the cast include an ex-TV journalist who runs a plastic surgery clinic, an interior design student, a property developer, a barrister and the co-founder of a catering company. Not one of them is married to an AFL player, which seems like a missed opportunity.

Jackie Gillies (née Jakica Ivancevic) married Ben in 2010 at a ceremony in their former home of Newcastle. Silverchair’s Daniel Johns was best man alongside talent scout Jake Denny.

When Silverchair went on their 2002 hiatus, Ben formed Tambalane with Wes Carr, who released only one album before breaking up (Carr went on to enjoy his own reality TV show fame, winning the sixth season of Australian Idol in 2008). Since Silverchair’s more permanent disbandment, Gillies has formed another new band, this time called Bento. Bento released their debut album Diamond Days last year.

Real Housewives of Melbourne is being filmed now but you’ll have to wait until next year for it to air on Foxtel so that you can hate-tweet about how terrible it is. Other Real Housewives spin-offs have already run in Greece, Canada and France, bringing the inevitable day when every single citizen of planet Earth has appeared in a reality show several steps closer.

If you missed out on hearing Ben Gillies impersonate Michael Hutchence last year, here’s what Bento sounded like.
