MARGARET Court Arena's retractable roof should be ready in time for the 2015 Australian Open, Premier Denis Napthine says.
The $366 million refit of the arena, which will see the tennis venue expanded with extra seating, will be used for concerts and other events when the roof is finished.
Dr Napthine visited the building site to inspect progress.
He said Melbourne Park was already one of the world's best sporting precincts and the upgrade would cement Victoria's reputation as Australia's sporting capital.
"This upgrade will ensure that Melbourne Park remains the home of the Australian Open until at least 2026," Dr Napthine said.
The new arena will also feature a glass curtain wall around its exterior to open the building up to the public areas outside the venue.
"When complete, Melbourne Park will have three stadiums with operable roofs. No other grand slam tennis venue can offer three operable roofs," he said.
The Government has allocated another $5.5 million to plan stage two of the Melbourne Park redevelopment, which will focus on the area between Rod Laver and Hisense arenas.
