Planning Minister Matthew Guy rejects idea of Docklands airport for Melbourne - ABC Local

Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy says his preferred location for Melbourne's third major airport is not in the inner city.

A parliamentary committee has released a report suggesting the State Government consider the construction of an airport in the Docklands precinct.

The committee's proposal is based on several European cities, including the London City airport.

Mr Guy says he would preferred to see a domestic airport built in the city's south-east.

"I believe a third airport is going to be needed for Melbourne in the long-term but it is best off further out of the city, rather than in it," he said.

"Therefore, we create the reverse commute rather than having everyone going the same way at the same time."

Docklands Community Association president Roger Gardner has told ABC local radio that a lack of land is just one of the issues with the proposal.

"You wouldn't even be able to find a postage stamp size bit of land, there isn't any," he said.

"(It's the) craziest idea I've ever heard unless there's some new type of hover aircraft that I don't know about."
