FOOTBALLER Rohan Bail says he is "lucky to be alive" after a group of Demons were involved in an emergency plane landing in the Northern Territory yesterday.

Bail and veteran ruckman Mark Jamar were travelling with ex-Demons Austin Wonaemirri and Russell Robertson on a light plane from Alice Springs to Tennant Creek when the plane began filling with smoke.

The plane was forced down after the players were told by the pilot "we've got some issues".

A flustered Bail said yesterday: "We're lucky to be alive. I was sitting in the cockpit and we took off and then all of a sudden there was some smoke and a lot of heat coming into the cabin," he said.

"The pilot was pretty calm, and then he said put your seatbelts on, we've got to land."

Jamar last night told the Herald Sun a malfunctioning valve caused the cabin to heat up dramatically but praised the cool pilot.

"We were a bit uncertain what was going to happen for a bit, but it all ended up OK."

They were eventually able to land again in Tennant Creek for a football clinic with 200 children.
