A GENEROUS couple has pledged an astounding $10 million to Melbourne's most prestigious university - the largest individual gift in its 160-year history.
Well-known Melbourne QC Allan Myers and wife Maria have donated the cash as the University of Melbourne kicks off a philanthropic campaign to raise $500 million by 2017.
It plans to spend the money on world-leading research in health, human rights and criminology.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Glyn Davis said the campaign would help the university go beyond what it could achieve with existing funding.
"It is about lifting Melbourne to number among the finest universities in the world," Prof Davis said.
"It will allow us to educate tomorrow's leaders, help us find answers to some of the most important challenges facing the world and strengthen our ties with communities in every corner of the world."
Mr Myers is leading a distinguished 20-member board which also includes Jeanne Pratt and former Governor of Victoria Sir James Gobbo.
As well as research, money raised will be used to fund scholarships for disadvantaged students, attract staff and retain researchers.
Almost $250 million has been raised so far.
Hundreds of students and more than 1900 staff are among the donors.
The $10 million gift will help the university's law and arts faculties, the Melbourne Theatre Company, Newman College and fund medical research and other projects.
