MELBOURNE Storm coach Craig Bellamy has vowed to fully support injured young star Matt Duffie who is facing a double-dose of season ending surgery this week.

The 22-year-old Kiwi will have both a shoulder and knee reconstruction after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament playing for Storm's reserve grade team last weekend.

Duffie will also have the shoulder reconstruction club officials were hoping to avoid after the winger sustained an injury earlier this season but strengthened enough to get through the season.

Bellamy said news of Duffie's plight was given to the team after an energetic training session on Sunday morning and did put a dent in his team's energy levels before Monday's draw with Manly.

He said Duffie, who missed last year's Grand Final win and this year's World Club Challenge victory was "inconsolable", but hoped he'd be back next year.

"You can imagine how that young fella is feeling. He was shattered," Bellamy said.

"For a young guy to go through that, I have never seen that before.

"He has having so much bad luck. He is a really good player, a really good guy, he works really hard and he's going through some real bad luck.

"We're right behind him and we are going to stick by him and make sure whatever he wants to do, we'll support him.

"It's a big thing for a young athlete to have a have to shoulder reconstruction and a knee reconstruction at the same time."

Bellamy said the dual operations and necessary recovery would test Duffie's resilience, and hoped he would come through the other side.

"I'll only have concerns for his future if it's all too much for him. He's already had a couple of shoulder reconstructions," Bellamy said.

"He would have been in our Grand Final side. He missed the World Club Challenge, he would have been in that side.

"He has had a whole heap of disappointments.

"To his credit he gets knocked down but he keeps getting back up again.

"This will test his resilience. But hes only a young guy, if he can have a free run from now he'll end up playing NRL next year hopefully.:

Duffie will undergo knee surgery on Tuesday followed by the shoulder reconstruction in a couple of weeks time.
