A Melbourne man who stamped repeatedly on the head of an Irish backpacker has pleaded guilty to murder.

Luke James Wentholt, 31, was due to go on trial for the murder of David Greene, 30, from Dublin, but changed his plea at a hearing in the Supreme Court of Victoria on Wednesday.

Wentholt also pleaded guilty to intentionally causing serious injury to Mr Greene's friend David Byas, 28.

He was remanded in custody for a pre-sentence plea hearing on 30 July.

A crown prosecutor said the plea was put and accepted on the basis of reckless murder.

David Greene and David Byas were attacked at a boarding house in St Kilda East in August 2012.

Mr Greene later died in hospital. Mr Byas was left in a coma for a number of days, but survived.

At a previous hearing in Melbourne Magistrates' Court Wentholt's girlfriend at the time of the attack said she saw him stamping on the heads of Mr Greene and Mr Byas after an argument at the hostel.

Shayla Pullen said a group of friends were drinking at the hostel and Wentholt was very drunk.

She told the committal hearing she thought Wentholt, a martial arts expert, was angry because Mr Greene had joked about accidentally seeing Ms Pullen topless earlier in the week.
