MELBOURNE was rocked by the king of all monsters today when King Kong thundered into town.

The monster ape escaped from the Regent Theatre to climb Eureka Tower, clutching Ann Darrow in his gigantic 4.5m hand high above the Melbourne skyline.

Visitors to the Eureka Skydeck were thrilled to witness the scene with stunt expert Leigh-Anne Vizer, as Darrow, clutching King Kong's hand, suspended 300 metres outside the building.

The hand will remain at Skydeck on Level 88 of Eureka Tower for the next nine months to celebrate the opening of King Kong the Musical on June 15 at the Regent Theatre.

A lavish 1930s cocktail party will be held at Eureka tonight to herald his arrival.
