The Fair Work Commission is set to begin its annual minimum wage hearings in Melbourne this morning.
The Australian Council of Trade Unions is asking for a $30 per week boost to the minimum wage, saying it is necessary to address a significant gap between the wages of the country's lowest paid and the rest of the workforce.
Business groups want a much lower figure.
The Australian Industry Group has suggested an increase of $12 per week, while the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has nominated a rise of $5.80.
The ACCI says raising the minimum wage by $30 per week would cost businesses nearly $2.5 billion each year and could cost jobs.
