Train delays hit Melbourne as Williams Landing faces first peak hour - ABC Online

Regional Rail Link works caused delays across the Melbourne train system this morning, with services to the new Williams Landing Station being among those worst affected.

Weekend track works on the Regional Rail Link ran overtime today, causing delays across the metropolitan train system that will extend into this afternoon.

Yesterday Metro Trains announced that weekend works were running later than planned and some Monday morning peak hour services would be running to a modified timetable.

This morning they announced that service changes would continue to affect the Werribee, Frankston, Williamstown, Craigieburn and Sunbury lines during the evening peak hour.

Busses were called in to supplement trains between Newport and North Melbourne this morning, where delays stretched to more than half an hour.

Metro said the signalling works being undertaken were 'very complex' and 'presented a number of challenges'.

They said around one thousand people had been working on the upgrade over the four days since Anzac Day.

The delays came as the new Williams Landing station faced its first weekday peak hour.

The station, situated on the Werribee line, has been built to accomodate the growing population in the Point Cook area.

ABC Reporter Richelle Hunt said passengers she spoke to at the station were generally pleased with it, although some were concerned that the lack of a pedestrian crossing on Palmers Rd made accessing the footbridge difficult.

Public Transport Victoria says VicRoads are aware of the concerns.

Commuters complained of the train delays on 774 ABC Melbourne's Facebook page this morning.

"Seddon had four full trains, with doors having trouble closing at 7:15, 7:26, 7:40 and 7:50," says Jaqueline. "Could not get on them."

"There were two trains in a row (7.42 and 8.04) cancelled on the Laverton (Altona loop) line," says Elizabeth. "Disgraceful."
