North unconcerned by Dan Bates role - The Australian

NORTH Melbourne coach Brad Scott says his club has no concerns about its fitness and supplements program in 2011 when it employed Dan Bates as its doctor.

Bates was stood down on Friday when it was revealed that, as Melbourne's doctor last year, he consulted on possible illegal supplements with controversial sports performance scientist Stephen Dank, who is at the centre of the Essendon scandal.

Melbourne failed to declare the association between Bates and Dank until it was exposed by the ABC's 7.30.

"There's an obvious link (but) I can't believe it's a news story," Scott said. "We didn't hide the fact that Dan Bates was our doctor for a year.

"Once the news broke about the link between Dr Dan Bates and Stephen Dank, we made contact with Dan and sought a written assurance that he'd had no contact with Stephen Dank in his time here as an employee.

"He has since provided that in writing that he's had no contact there. We welcome any potential investigation as to Dan's role while he was our doctor."

Scott said North had been in contact with the AFL since Friday, adding that the league had assured the club it was "really confident" in North's medical processes and protocols.

"We were always in full contact on that with the AFL and I'd suggest instead of asking me, ask (AFL chief executive) Andrew Demetriou or ask Dr Harry Unglick, the medical officer at the AFL, if they have any concerns with our medical processes and procedures," Scott said. "We've been open and honest and we've disclosed absolutely everything to the AFL, so we have no concerns."

RICHMOND midfielder Reece Conca will miss at least a month with a right foot injury.

Conca, one of the Tigers' best so far this season, has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his foot. "The good thing is we picked it up this early. It didn't develop into a crack or stress fracture," Richmond's elite performance manager Peter Burge said.

Conca will wear a moon boot before he returns to running.

He has been ruled out of the Tigers' match against Fremantle in Perth tomorrow night, and most likely the following three games.

A CROWD of more than 25,000 at tonight's first premiership match in New Zealand will be a "significant success", St Kilda said yesterday.

More than 20,000 tickets have been sold for the Saints-Swans contest, and it is estimated that 4500 Australians have made the trip to Wellington. Westpac Stadium can hold 34,000.

ADELAIDE'S emerging midfielder Brad Crouch has injured a hamstring and won't play against Carlton on Saturday. The 19-year-old suffered the injury during Adelaide's training session yesterday.
