ENGLISH giant Liverpool's match against Melbourne Victory in July is a $5 million public sellout with almost 80,000 tickets sold yesterday.
Two allocations - a morning window for Liverpool and Melbourne Victory members, and an afternoon one for the general public - went in a matter of hours as fans almost sent Ticketek into meltdown.
The final attendance for the July 24 match in the 103,000-capacity MCG will depend on the take-up of the 20,000 Melbourne Cricket Club members, but it is expected to go close to 95,000.
Victory officials revealed a staggering 33,000 tickets were sold in the first 33 minutes when they went on sale yesterday morning and the club confirmed that all pre-sale and public tickets were sold.
Melbourne Victory managing director Richard Wilson was taken aback by the response, which follows the 82,000 sellout of the Manchester United-A-League All Stars game at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on July 20.
"The interest in this game has been phenomenal and just goes to show how big a club like Liverpool FC is globally, while it further emphasises the great strides the sport is making in our fantastic city of Melbourne," he said.
"For our club to be involved in a fixture like this at a stadium like the MCG in front of potentially 90,000 people, with millions of others watching on TV around the world, is just unbelievable."
Liverpool has promised to bring a full-strength squad on its first trip here, including Steve Gerrard and Luis Suarez.
