A FINE, cool morning has greeted the thousands of people who have begun arriving for Melbourne's Anzac day dawn service.
A light illuminates the Shrine and flags are flying at half mast.
Organisers are expecting a crowd of about 40,000 people.
Commemorations will begin at 5.45am (AEST) and will be followed by a wreath laying service and march later on Thursday.
Shrine of Remembrance CEO Denis Baguley says it will be a very traditional service, reflecting the commemeration of Australian service men and women.
"It is a simple service, but one that is very poignant," he told AAP.
He said everyone from young children to veterans would be attending the service.
