An emergency warning has been issued for an area 12 miles (20km) north of Melbourne 's central business district.
A Victoria state Country Fire Authority official said around two thousand hectares had been burnt so far.
Around 70 firefighting units have been deployed to control the blaze. No injuries have been reported.
Meanwhile, in the west of the state, firefighters were battling two wildfires that have merged in the Grampians area, destroying 3,200 hectares, according to local media.
Local residents said they were worried that extremely dry scrub and farmland lying ahead of the main fire front would make it difficult to control spot fires.
