Fire crews monitor winds near Melbourne grassfire - Yahoo!7 News

Firefighters are closely watching how a wind change is affecting a large grassfire in Melbourne's north.

One home and a number of sheds were destroyed and a second house was damaged when the fire broke out at Donnybrook and burnt towards Epping and Craigieburn yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters gained some control over the 2,500-hectare blaze last night, but a wind change has reached the area.

There are now fears the fire could change direction and burn back towards Wollert, Woodstock and Epping.

Country Fire Authority (CFA) incident controller John Deering says a number of suburbs remain on alert while firefighters assess the situation.

"There's been a lot of work done through the night and that's really challenged our people," he said.

"It's been dangerous; there's been wildlife and stock loss.

"It's a hazardous environment and we're making sure our crews stay safe and do the job so the community stays safe."

Meanwhile, firefighters in Victoria's far west worked through the night to protect properties threatened by a large bushfire in the Grampians.

The fire is almost 9,000 hectares in size and has reached the Victoria Valley Road. Last night, it was spotting up to one kilometre ahead.
