ONE of Australia's best-known DJs, Adrian Thomas aka DJ Ajax, has died in Melbourne after being hit by a truck.

Thomas, 41, had performed on tours for Daft Punk, Canadian electronic duo MSTRKRFT, Scottish electronic musician Mylo and Italian outfit The Bloody Beetroots.

Victoria Police confirmed that a pedestrian died after being hit by a truck in Parkville just before 1am yesterday.

"It is believed the man ran in front of the northbound truck on College Crescent. He died at the scene," a police spokeswoman told AAP.

Thomas had been a resident DJ at Melbourne's Chinese Laundry for the past seven years. Early this morning the Chinese Laundry posted a message on Twitter: "Absolutely heart breaking news about one of our long time former resident Dj's AJAX.

"Ajax was resident at Chinese Laundry for over 7 years and was a great friend to everyone here & an amazing DJ that was always a crowd favourite.
