Coach John Aloisi urges travel-sick Melbourne Heart to bury Phoenix - The Daily Telegraph

AT times like this, Melbourne Heart coach John Aloisi, a former striker, must wish his aching knees had held out for a few more years.

Heart travels to New Zealand hoping to arrest the worst away record in the A-League (one win, one draw and nine losses), and Aloisi says ruthlessness in attack will cure the illness.

While Heart's defence has remained solid, only Perth Glory (five goals) has scored less on the road this season, with Heart hitting the net just seven times in 11 games.

Wellington lost 2-1 at home to Newcastle on Wednesday amid revelations its players learned of coach Ricki Herbert's resignation via Twitter.

"(Our) players straight away refocused after (the win over) Sydney and it's a big game for us," Aloisi said. "We need to get rid of this tag about our away form.

"Against the Jets (in the last away game) we created enough chances but we need to be more ruthless in front of goal. When we create chances away, we need to put them away, like we did that in the first half against Sydney."

Sunday's clash is in Dunedin, and Aloisi said the neutral venue could work in Heart's favour, although he insisted Phoenix can't be taken lightly under interim coach Chris Greenacre.

"They're going to be dangerous because they wouldn't have liked the way that things went (with Herbert)," Aloisi said.
