MELBURNIANS could be subject to some of the world's toughest anti-smoking laws under a new plan to be considered by the city council.
Newly elected Melbourne City Councillor Richard Foster is pushing for smoking to be banned in all public places, including footpaths, in a bid to make the city healthier and a nicer place to visit.
Mr Foster told Fairfax the moves are in the interest of the more than 80 per cent of people who don't smoke.
He said the ban would be extended to all areas in the city that aren't private property and include alfresco dining areas and public land outside office blocks.
Mr Foster called for a trial of the public smoking ban introduced as early as March.
