A Melbourne city councillor wants smoking to be banned in all public areas of the CBD.
Newly-elected councillor, Richard Foster, is finalising a proposal to ban smoking in all public spaces in the CBD and the wider Melbourne City Council area.
He is confident of gaining support for banning smoking in all streets and laneways, on footpaths and in any open public space.
"We're inundated with complaints from residents and from shoppers, from visitors to our city, that it's really hard to walk a city block without walking through a cloud of cigarette smoke," he said.
"It would be positioning Melbourne as the international city, taking the lead on reducing the incidence of smoking and certainly reducing the impacts of passive smoking."
