POLICE have described as "devastating" the scene of a crash that killed a motorcyclist and pillion passenger in Melbourne's southeast this morning.

Police said two men died when the motorcycle, travelling north in Westall Rd, struck a truck turning from Westall Rd into Rowan Rd Dingley Village about 7.45am.

Both died at the scene. The victims have not yet been identified.

Sen-Sgt Simon Humphrey said the truck driver was "obviously very shaken by his experience but was helping police with their inquiries".

"It is a devastating scene here this morning and police never get use to this sort of thing," he said.

"We urge all motorists to take care, slow down and be aware of their surroundings."

Witness Bob Murphy estimated the victims were both in their 20s.

Mr Murphy was stuck in traffic this morning when he saw the crash.

"It was a shocking thing; it leaves a sick feeling in your stomach," he said.

Mr Murphy said he drove back around to the crash to see if he could help.

"One you could tell had died straight away, the other, they kept working on him but just couldn't bring him round,” he said.

Mr Murphy said another witness tried to stop traffic in Westall Rd but drivers ignored him.

"Traffic was backed right up to buggery and this guy tried to stop cars to make some room and they nearly ran him over; he ended up having to bang on one of the cars and scream at them to stop,” Mr Murphy said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
