Late penalty sees Jets steal point - Examiner.com

Melbourne Heart got off to a good start but faded late allowing Newcastle Jets to come back and steal a 3-3 draw at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.

It took just 33 seconds for Heart to take the lead as Patrick Gerhardt’s long ball was played in but blocked by Neville only for his clearance to go as far as Richie Garcia who had time and space to easily slam home the seventh fastest goal in A-League history.

Just four minutes later Heart doubled their lead as Garcia was fouled in the box allowing Josip Tadic to step up and score the penalty putting Melbourne Heart well and truly in control.

Heart dominated the opening half and they continually threatened Matthew Nash in the Newcastle goal but struggled to beat the Jets’ second string custodian.

The best chance for Newcastle came in the 27th minute as Emile Heskey was able to get free and get a header away but it sailed high and wide.

Simon Colosimo could well have put Heart three up in the 38th minute only for his shot to be well saved by Nash.

After half-time the Jets responded after being dominated the first half and got back in the game when Craig Goodwin worked his way in to the box and headed home Ruben Zadkovic’s cross to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute.

In the 63rd minute the Jets were back on level terms as Ruben Zadkovich hit a powerful shot from outside the area that left Clint Bolton with no hope.

Garcia put Melbourne Heart back in front as Tadic and Matt Thompson linked up with Garcia for a 71st minute goal seemingly put Melbourne Heart in front.

Just as it looked like Melbourne Heart would be back in the winners circle Newcastle Jets stole a point as Simon Colosimo committed a foul allowing Ryan Griffiths to step up and score the penalty to manage a draw.
