Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic looks set to start a short-priced favourite to win his fourth Australian Open in six years come January following his season-ending ATP World Tour Finals triumph over Roger Federer.
Djokovic confirmed his status as the world's top-ranked player by beating the Swiss master in straight sets in London on Tuesday morning (Australian time) to win the most important tournament outside of the four grand slam events for only the second time.
And with the short tennis off-season now underway before the start of the 2013 tour in Australia in January, Djokovic is shaping as clearly the man to beat at Melbourne Park this summer.
Three of Djokovic's five grand slam titles have come at the Australian Open - including his maiden success at the highest level in 2008 while he has also won the tournament in each of the past two years.
Immediately after his win over Federer at the season-ending tournament in London, Djokovic firmed from $2.68 to $2.56 to win the 2013 Australian Open at Betfair while he is even shorter at sportsbet.com.au at $2.50.
And Djokovic has already attracted nearly 40 percent of money already wagered on who will win the Australian Open men's singles crown next year at Betfair.
Great Britain's Andy Murray, who finally broke through to win his first grand slam tournament at the US Open in September, is second favourite at $3.40 at sportsbet.com.au and $3.75 at Betfair.
Murray has lost both Australian Open finals he has contested - to Federer in 2010 and Djokovic in 2011.
Federer, who stretched his record of most grand slam singles triumphs to 17 in 2012 by winning a record seventh Wimbledon, will be aiming for his fifth Australian Open in January but only his second since 2007.
However Federer is only third favourite in current betting at $5.80 with Betfair with the forgotten Rafael Nadal, who has not played since suffering a shock second round exit at Wimbledon due to knee problems, at double figure odds.
But if the 2009 Australian Open champion and seven-time French Open winner is fit and firing come January then he is currently great value at $13.50 to win the 2013 Australian Open with Betfair.
Once again those four are dominating early betting with Argentina's 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro the only other player in contention at Betfair at $16 with every other player priced at $60 or more.
