The co-head of a Melbourne research team that has given hope to diabetes sufferers that daily insulin injections might become a thing of the past has won Diabetes Australia's award for an outstanding contribution to diabetes.
The work of Professor Len Harrison's team, of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute's molecular medicine division, has led to clinical trials that could prevent type 1 diabetes.
Prof Harrison has also been working on stem cell research that is making important steps to replacing insulin injections for people with diabetes.
Diabetes Australia chief executive Professor Greg Johnson said that just over one million Australians live with diabetes every day.
He said hundreds of thousands of Australians have silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes, while more than two million Australians have pre-diabetes and are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes."
The Viertel Post Doctoral Fellowship in Diabetes was awarded to Professor Andrew Murphy from Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute for his work that investigates why three out of four people with diabetes die from heart disease.
