MELBOURNE Victory legend Danny Allsopp has retired, effective immediately.

The 34-year-old joined teammates at Etihad Stadium for training today, but made the shock decision to announce he is quitting the sport this afternoon.

"I’m extremely proud of what I have achieved throughout my career and football has allowed me to play in leagues across four different continents, including the English Premier League, and those experiences will stay with me forever," Allsopp said in a statement.

"There have been many highlights along the way, and obviously the great success we enjoyed will always stay with me, but I feel very proud to have been a part of such an exciting period for not only this club, but the A-League and our sport in Australia.

"Now is the right time to move onto the next chapter of my life."

Having joined the club in its debut season, Allsopp played 118 A-League, netted 42 goals and won the competition's Golden Boot award in 2006-07, the season Victory won its first championship.

Coach Ange Postecoglou paid tribute to his striker.

"Danny has been a very loyal servant to this club and has enjoyed a fantastic career, so we certainly wish him well," Postecoglou said.

"His record speaks for itself and to do what he has done over such a long career is testament to his commitment and professionalism."

Victory will honour Allsopp before the round 5 clash with Wellington Phoenix at Etihad Stadium.
