Melbourne has secured the services of key forward Chris Dawes from Collingwood.

The Magpies announced Dawes would join the Demons in 2013 in exchange for a first round draft pick and a swap of later round picks.

It is believed that the draft pick is pick No.20, which will give the Magpies picks No.17, No.18 and No.20.

Melbourne will also hand over pick No.40 and Collingwood will send pick No.58 back to the Demons

Dawes played 71 matches for the Magpies in a career as a tall forward that reached its peak with his role in the side which won the 2010 premiership.

Magpies director of football Geoff Walsh said Dawes had been a good servant to the club.

"Chris can be proud of his contribution to Collingwood. He played some good football for the club, where he has been a popular figure, and shared in the 2010 premiership," Walsh said.

"In his time with us, Chris always gave what he had and for that we thank him. We wish him well."

It is the third trade Collingwood has made after securing free agent Quinten Lynch through free agency and sending midfielder Sharrod Wellingham the other way in trade.

Melbourne has already secured free agent Shannon Byrnes from Geelong during the trade period.
