A VIRUS at the Werribee quarantine centre has thrown a scare into the camps several of the leading Emirates Melbourne Cup contenders, including last year's runner-up Red Cadeaux.

Lloyd Williams-owned Hartani has been placed in isolation after showing signs of an infection.

The Irish import is quartered in the Media Puzzle stables which, apart from Red Cadeaux, also houses Godolphin pair Lost In The Moment and Cavalryman.

The bulk of the international horses, including Dunaden and Americain, are quartered in the Newminister stables at the other end of Werribee racecourse.

The virus is believed to have been contained.

Choice made easy for Weld stable

The scare came as Michael Rodd, beaten in a desperately tight photo-finish behind Dunaden in last year's Cup, admitted to tactical error on Red Cadeaux last season.

"I learned a lot off riding him last year," Rodd said.

"I definitely got to the front too early on him - he took me by surprise with his turn of foot, I didn't think he was going to let go like that.

"All I've been thinking about this day last year is this horse and how I really want to turn the tables on what happened last year.

"I'm very excited to be booked on him again and I know he can get there on the day and do it.

"He runs the distance out very strong, so I'm looking forward to it."

GAI Waterhouse is still confident Glencadam Gold will be fit to run in Saturday’s Lexus Stakes despite not galloping at Flemington this morning.
