RACING identity Francesca Cumani is one of several international headliners making a name for themselves during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The 29-year-old daughter of Italian-born trainer Luca Cumani could be joined by up to 11 international horses for the 152nd running of the Melbourne Cup (equalling the record).

One of the two Cup contenders her father has brought to Australia, Mount Athos is favoured to run well.

"I think Dunedan has taken over as the favourite but Mount Athos is still up there," she said.

"He's been very impressive for us in England and he's settled well in quarantine (at Werribee)."

Cumani will join Channel 7's commentary team on her seventh visit to Melbourne.

"I'll be going into the mounting yard to talk about the horses there. I love doing that because you're close to the action," she said.

Cumani plans to spend a couple of weeks in Australia after the carnival before heading to Hong Kong to commentate for CNN.

Ms Cumani was linked with Hawthorn midfielder Brad Sewell during last year's carnival, but said she was unlikely to catch up with him this time.

"I don't think so, I don't even think he's in town," she said.
